Amateur Radio License TESTING (VE Testing)
Lake County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES) conducts ARRL VE ham radio license testing for all license classes, the second Monday every month (3rd Monday in September and January) at 7:00 PM at the Lake County Regional Operations and Communications Facility (ROC) in Libertyville, IL.
Our VE team can be available to coordinate special testing sessions for your club events, training sessions and hamfests. Contact our VE administrator (see below) for additional information and availability.
BEFORE YOU REGISTER
To conduct any business with the FCC, you must register in their CORES system and obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN). This number will be used to uniquely identify you for all transactions.
Register in FCC CORES and receive your FRN before sitting for your exam. We cannot test you if you do not have a valid FRN.

REGISTRATION
Please review the Test Session Rules prior to registering.
By registering, you indicate your agreement with these rules.
Follow this link to Register for the desired session. At this time, we don’t accept walk-in candidates. Please register in advance so that we will have an accurate count of participants attending each test session.
WHAT TO BRING
- Test Fees
$15.00 fee covers up to all three test elements at one session. An additional fee is required to repeat a failed element. For those 16 years old and under, RACES will refund your fee upon successfully passing element 2 for the technician license. Please bring the exact amount or make your check payable to Lake County RACES. - ID’s
Two required, one with a photo. - Ham License
You do not need a copy of your ham license, unless you have an expired license. In that case, bring a photocopy. - Certificate of Successful Completion of Exam (CSCE)
You do not need a copy of a previous CSCE, unless you have an expired license. In that case, bring a photocopy if you have it. - Other Pertinent Documentation
If you have an expired license, bring the original and a photocopy of your license, CSCE and any other documents to prove previous licensure. Contact the administrator prior to the session to discuss what testing and documentation is needed.
